The United States central bank cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank
The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.
The number of jobs added to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, which he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
